Welcome to A Moving Affair 2026!
Ten years ago, Shelter Movers was an idea. An idea built on a simple belief:
that no one should have to choose between their safety and everything they
own. I have had the extraordinary privilege of being part of Shelter Movers’
journey from those earliest days. I’ve watched an idea become a service, a
service become an organization and an organization grow into a national
movement that has now supported thousands of survivors and their families.
None of this would have been possible without people who believed in us.
To the donors who invested in an untested idea, the community agencies
who trusted us with their clients, the corporate partners who shared their
resources, and the thousands of volunteers who showed up, rolled up their
sleeves and got to work: thank you. You saw the potential in what we were
building and you helped make it real.
As we celebrate ten years and more than 10,000 moves, I am immensely
proud of what we’ve accomplished together. But I am even more excited
about what comes next.
Our ambition for the next decade is not simply to do more moves. It is to
ensure that safe relocation becomes a recognized and accessible part of the
broader response to gender-based violence across Canada. Ultimately, I’d
love nothing more than for organizations like ours to work ourselves out of
a job. Until that day comes, however, we have some work to do. And, as it
happens, a little fundraising too.
My hope is that tonight you leave not only inspired by the courage of the
survivors we serve, but also by the extraordinary difference people can make
when they choose to act. Whether through your generosity, your leadership,
your relationships or the way you show up in your own community, each of us
has an opportunity to be part of the solution.
Thank you for being part of our first ten years, for celebrating this milestone
with us tonight and for helping shape
what comes next.
In partnership and with gratitude,
Vicky Sage
